Calcined Muscovite Mica Paper

Calcined Muscovite Mica Paper

Type 502-1 Calcined Muscovite Mica Paper is a continuous roll made from calcined muscovite mica by pulp making, paper copying, slitting and rewinding. Three standard mass grades: 60 g/m², 120 g/m² and 160 g/m². Specifications: average thickness 40 / 80 / 100 μm, dielectric strength 22 kV/mm, tensile strength 3.2 / 4 / 6 N/cm, heat resistance ≥ 850 ℃, tolerance ±3% mean. Calcination removes crystal water before paper forming, giving more uniform flake size and better performance than natural muscovite paper. Used as base material for fire-resistant mica tape and resin-rich mica tape. Contact Kaxite for a free sample and factory quotation.

Calcined Muscovite Mica Paper

Calcined muscovite mica paper (type 502-1) is a continuous roll made from calcined muscovite mica by pulp making, paper copying, slitting and rewinding. During calcination, crystal water and volatile matter are driven off before the paper is formed, so the finished sheet does not blister or delaminate when the fire test ramps to 850 ℃.

Compared with natural muscovite paper, the calcined grade uses mica flakes of uniform size and delivers better overall performance — a stable dielectric layer that holds up in resin-rich and fire-resistant mica tape production.

Properties

What Calcined Muscovite Mica Paper Delivers

A

Excellent high temperature resistance

Calcination removes crystal water before paper forming, so the sheet reaches a 850 ℃ heat resistance rating and holds its dielectric layer without blistering or delamination at the fire test temperature.

B

Excellent insulation properties

A stable dielectric strength of 22 kV/mm across all three mass grades. The uniform mica flake distribution delivers a consistent barrier layer for the downstream tape.

C

Stable chemical properties

Excellent acid, alkali, moisture and ageing resistance. The paper does not swell or lose mechanical strength under long-term exposure to humidity and temperature cycling.

D

Excellent mechanical properties

Tensile strength runs from 3.2 N/cm at 60 g/m² up to 6 N/cm at 160 g/m² — enough to survive high-speed paper copying, silicone resin bonding and downstream slitting.

E

Excellent permeability and air permeability

Controlled penetration time (25 s / 65 s / 90 s by grade) lets silicone resin soak through evenly during bonding, which is critical for resin-rich mica tape constructions.

F

Uniform flake size distribution

Calcined flakes are screened to a uniform size, giving the paper a more consistent basis weight and better overall performance than natural muscovite paper of the same mass grade.

Production Flow

How Mica Paper Becomes Mica Insulation

1

Pulp making and paper copying

Calcined muscovite flakes are suspended, screened and formed into a continuous paper on the paper-making line. Mass grade (60 / 120 / 160 g/m²) is set at this stage.

2

Slitting and rewinding

The formed paper is slit to customer width and rewound into rolls. Roll length and core size are set here to match downstream equipment.

3

Reinforcement and silicone resin bonding

Mica paper is used as the base material and reinforced with glass fibre cloth, film or other reinforcing materials through silicone resin bonding.

4

High-temperature baking and drying

The bonded web is baked and dried at high temperature, then slit into finished mica rolls and mica insulation materials.

Buyer FAQ

Common Questions from Cable and Insulation Buyers

Q1

What is the difference between calcined muscovite mica paper and natural muscovite mica paper?

Both use muscovite mica as the base mineral. Calcined muscovite is calcined before the paper is formed, driving off crystal water and volatile matter. The result is a paper with more uniform flake size, better basis weight consistency and better overall performance than natural muscovite paper — which is why calcined 502-1 is preferred for fire-resistant and resin-rich mica tape. See the Muscovite Mica Paper page for the natural grade.

Q2

Which mass grades are available and how do I choose?

Three standard mass grades are supplied: 60 g/m², 120 g/m² and 160 g/m². Lower mass (60 g/m²) suits thin-wall tape constructions that need a fast penetration time (25 s); higher mass (160 g/m²) suits heavier fire barriers that need higher tensile strength (6 N/cm). Dielectric strength is 22 kV/mm across all three grades.

Q3

What is the heat resistance of type 502-1 calcined muscovite mica paper?

850 ℃ minimum, measured per the heat resistance parameter in the specification table above. This is higher than natural muscovite paper and matches the calcined mica tape grade used in fire-resistant cable production.

Q4

Can this mica paper be used to produce mica tape and mica roll?

Yes. Type 502-1 is used as the base material in fire-resistant mica tape and resin-rich mica tape production. The paper is bonded with silicone resin and reinforced with glass fibre cloth or film, then high-temperature baked, dried and slit into finished mica rolls. See Calcined Mica Tape for the finished product.
